Commentary

Following 9/11 I spent months processing my grief and horror through adding white chalk media images to a 6'x 12' swatch of black photo backdrop paper. It seems I had to see those clearly in black and white before beginning this painting about that event. I started with the powerful standing eagle posture as I watched New Yorkers and the world rise above the pain and destruction – the fire and ashes of lost lives and crumpled steel skyscrapers. Hearing the many stories of human compassion in the wake of all that devastation fueled my conviction that the “right” thing is always happening, whether I like it or not; and that the sacred and holy in each of us supports us in this rising above even the most horrific.
