Commentary

A number of paintings during this period reflected the personal growth I was pursuing through the Twelve Step work offered by the Al Anon program. I had no conscious awareness of what I was painting about while working on this piece, but a definite experience of expanded clarity and comfort in the doing. While the content seemed most to address Step 3, Al Anon friends could also assign other Steps to this image.

The strange, floating, slice-of-bread-like shape to the left of the kneeling figure's head showed up in an earlier painting of this period – Black Hole 1992 – in which one of the eagles (or spiritual presences) seems to be demonstrating the availability of its “bread of life” to me who was embroiled in an addiction-ridden existence, basically unable to see it.
